How is Your Mental Health?

How is Your Mental Health? May is National Mental Health Awareness Month .  Beginning in 1949, Mental Health Month has put a spotlight on the importance of mental health and wellness.  There is such a stigma attached to mental illness or mental health in general, that over 70 years of advocacy and education have yet to overcome.  While 1 in 5 people will experience mental illness at some point in their lifetimes, everyone has faced or will face struggles and challenges that affect their mental health.  You don't have to be diagnosed by a doctor or therapist to know if you're mental health is compromised.   Anxiety:   Intense, excessive, and persistent worry and fear about everyday situations. Some symptoms include: Fast heart rate, rapid breathing, sweating, and feeling tired. Stress:    Any type of change that causes physical, emotional, or psychological strain. Stress is your body's response to anything that requires attention or ac...

Men's Issues: An Introduction

Men’s Issues: An Introduction (Part 1 of a series on behavioral health issues affecting men) "Waste no more time arguing about what a good man should be. Be one.”  -Marcus Aurelius Let me just start by saying  MEN HAVE ISSUES!   We do, we really do and most of us aren’t talking about it.  It’s not manly for guys to talk about their problems, it makes them look weak!  Right??  WRONG!!   Instilled from an early age, boys are told to stop crying, suck it up, “rub some dirt on it!”.  Basically they learn to suppress their feelings because society frowns on men who may not be able to control themselves or be productive members of society.  It is assumed that men will just work and provide for their families, and any problems will be “handled” or ignored. The “Strong Silent-Type” is an image that is admired and attractive.  Admired and attractive to who you ask? Well, other men and women of course!!  Is that what makes...

You've Got a Friend in Me: What is a Friend Anyway??

Woody and Buzz Lightyear figured out how to be friends by the end of Toy Story I...after Buzz learned he wasn't a real Space Ranger, but a child's play thing..."YOU ARE A TOYYEEEE!!"  Still Woody saw the good in him and befriended him.   The term "friend" has come up many times in my practice and in my personal life as well.   I hear it all the time, "my friend <so and so>".  Oh, when was the last time you saw or spoke to him(or her)?  Oh, not since high school...oh not since 1st grade!  So is there a statute of limitations on being someone's friend when the friendship is not in use?  Does it need to be renewed every few years, or it expires?  Is that a lifetime title you are giving that person?  What do they need to do in order to maintain that title?  Do they need to make a phone call every few years to keep it active?  Will a text message saying "Hey" do? I don't know why I find this fascinating but I d...

Breaking Up is Hard to Do...Why Can’t I Just Move On??

"Breaking Up Is Hard To Do" -Neil Sedaka Don't take your love away from me Don't you leave my heart in misery If you go then I'll be blue 'Cause breaking up is hard to do I know I am dating myself here with a Neil Sedaka song, but I thought it was fitting for this topic.  You don't need to go download the song on iTunes or wherever, unless you really want to.  But be warned, next thing you know you'll be listening to all of his tunes, singing them in the car, or while you're working out in the gym!!  Very catchy tunes!  😱  (Yeah that's him over there! ) I have worked with many clients with various relationship issues but none has been more difficult then addressing the aftermath of a break-up.  Regardless of which side of the break-up you are on, coping with it can be extremely difficult, if not traumatic.  While the relationship is over, some may experience grief-like symptoms as a result.  Typically I hear people ...
